One of the gifts of Reiki is making time to be mindful. Karla and her Nursery/ Kindergarten students practice mindfulness every day. Mindfulness helps children understand their feelings and emotions, reducing their risk of mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. Mindful breathing relaxes the mind and body so stressful experiences can be calmly observed, reflected upon and responded to in an intentional way.
This book about mindful breathing was first published in June 2019 as a Nursery/Kindergarten class project to celebrate their year together. The second edition was released in October 2019 and includes a breath awareness resource page
(ISBN 978-1-9991680-1-8). The third read-aloud edition was shared as a resource for children and their families to help them cope with the stress of COVID-19. It can be viewed online at https://youtu.be/5eftsTzCIw4. This edition includes a verse, written in response to the global pandemic.
Karla has partnered with other educators in Manitoba and around the world to translate the fourth edition as a free resource for parents and teachers.

What started as a small class project has blossomed into a practical tool used by teachers, librarians, school counsellors, psychologists, behaviour specialists, Yoga instructors, parents and grandparents to help teach children about the benefits and ease of mindful breathing. It is our wish that this book helps children of all ages address their anxiety and feel and sense of peace and calm.
Through simple rhythmic poetry and relatable pictures, the book demonstrates the benefits and ease of mindful breathing. Photo illustrations display the emotions students experience and their strategies for self-regulation. Included is a practical resource page with easy and fun breath awareness exercises.
Breathing generates energy in our bodies. Practicing mindful breathing is a simple, practical, important life skill that calms the nervous system, helping children (and adults) develop self-regulation, focused attention, and positive well-being.
When we become aware and attune to our sacred breath we become mindful of the environment that surrounds us. Mindfulness practices create space for cultivating love, understanding, empathy, respect, compassion, kindness, generosity and connection. It is important to help our children learn to live mindfully because mindful, conscious children (and adults) can embody the change we need to see in the world.

With rising levels of anxiety and stress at all age levels, it is increasingly apparent that we need to intervene early and teach our children how to calm themselves. Through simple poetry and photos of children from her Nursery/kindergarten class, Karla teaches young children to pay attention to their breath when they feel upset as a means of returning to a state of peace and calm.” Counselling Therapist, Speaker and Author

This is truly a gem. So simple, so deep. I can even see how discussing a page a day with students/kids could be really meaningful.
The author’s energy is ever present throughout the book, visible in her students. I love this book and will use it for classes with children!
